Our approach to Music Theory

Music theory is approached in different ways depending on each student’s stage and goals.

  • For many students, theory is introduced gradually alongside instrumental lessons, allowing for an integrated and steady development of understanding.

  • As students progress to higher grades — particularly from Grade 4 onwards — a more focused and exam-oriented approach is often recommended, especially for those intending to continue beyond ABRSM Grade 5.

  • Some students may also choose to study theory separately from an earlier stage, progressing systematically through the grades to build a strong foundation and achieve formal qualifications.

We are happy to advise on the most appropriate approach for each student.

Intensive Music Theory Preparation (Grade 5)

Need to prepare for your Grade 5 Theory exam within a shorter timeframe?

We offer accelerated 1:1 or semi-private (1:2) lessons designed for focused and efficient learning. Previous students have successfully progressed from complete beginner to passing Grade 5 Theory within approximately 20 hours of lessons.

For current students, we recommend discussing your learning plan with your instrumental teacher first.
